Can Bailey’s Go Bad

does baileys go bad

Baileys is the most popular and well-known brand of Irish cream liqueur out there on the world market today. It’s sold in many different countries and is a popular mixer that can go with different types of alcohol. It has a creamy, chocolate flavor and it’s made up of mostly sugar content. Like most other types of liqueur with an overall lower level of alcohol, whether its’ opened or unopened, Baileys comes with an eventual expiration date. However, this does not mean that you can’t still take advantage of any discounts or sales for bottles of Baileys at the local supermarket. You want to get the most bang for your buck, and it’s quite common for liqueurs to last for at least a couple of years for you to drink and enjoy. The important question remains; does Baileys go bad?

Does Baileys Go Bad or Expire?

Yes, Baileys will certainly turn bad after a certain period of time like many other liqueurs of a similar nature. According to, it expires after 2 years when it was made. It doesn’t matter if it was unopened or opened, refrigerated or not, it will expire in couple of years.

However, there are ways to extend its’ lifespan and overall timeline using correct storage methods and practices. It may be best to still drink the Baileys shortly after initial purchase in order to get the best possible taste and for your guests to enjoy the drink as well. Despite the fact that your Baileys will eventually go bad, it should not discourage you from trying to make the product last as long as possible. By doing this, you will get the most out of the Baileys and so will your guests, family, and friends.

Storing The Baileys

The most important aspect to consider when storing Baileys and other types of liqueurs is to keep the bottle or product in a cool, dark area. Whether its’ a cellar, a liquor cabinet, or a pantry, Baileys should be away from any sunlight and away from any heat. The cooler the temperature, the better off the product will be but keeping the Baileys at room temperature would also be acceptable. If you really want to keep the Baileys cold and want to serve it chilled to your guests, you can put the bottle in the refrigerator after opening it up. If you haven’t opened up the Baileys, the freezer is another good option when it comes to making it very cold. After you open up the bottle for the first time or any time in general, it’s important to seal it tightly after usage. This will help keep oxygen and other outside elements from affecting the overall taste and texture of the Baileys. It’s also necessary to make sure that the cork hasn’t been damaged or tampered with. If it has been then it is likely that the contents of the bottle will be affected negatively.

Shelf Life of Baileys

When it comes to Irish cream liqueurs like Baileys, the lifespan of an opened bottle is usually around two years or so. It’s important to use the expiration date on the bottle as a reference point but with proper refrigeration and storage after opening, this date may be amenable to change. It’s recommended to drink and consume Baileys sooner than later because the flavor, texture, and overall taste will get worse over time. The taste of Baileys at six months of storage will be better than the taste of Baileys at two years of storage time. If the Bailey’s is stored in a cool and dark place, the original taste and texture will last longer during storage. After the bottle of Baileys has been open, it will last for up to an extra six months or more for consumption. This is true if you refrigerate the opened bottle of Baileys but if you don’t, it is unlikely that the Irish cream liqueur will last for those six months or so.

Signs of Bad Baileys

When it comes to telling if your Baileys Irish cream liqueur has gone bad or not, there are a few telltale signs to be aware of in order to be able to make a firm judgment. Because of the sugar and lower alcohol content of the Baileys, it is a definite that it will go bad at some point. To come to a decision, smell the liqueur and if the odor is inconsistent or smells off to you, then it’s likely that the Baileys has gone sour. If you’re still not sure after the smell test, you should have a small taste of it from the bottle to check to see if its’ flavor has changed or not. If it tastes terrible, then throw out the bottle because it’s not worth getting sick over. A small taste test won’t make you sick but it will help you to make a final decision regarding the quality of the overall bottle.

If you’re still not convinced, it’s good to check whether or not there is discoloration of the liquid or not or whether the texture has changed to become clumpy or mushy. If the Baileys passes all of the tests, then it is fine to drink and consume. You should discard the Baileys if it fails one or more of the tests in order to avoid the risks of becoming sick from consumption. Remember that Bailey’s has a lifespan of around two and a half years with proper storage. Please consume as soon as possible after purchase because it can go bad sooner than later.
