Living in New Hampshire I have only a handful of options for my family's grocery shopping. I have always been envious of my friends in more urban areas, who have a Whole Foods Market everywhere they go. For my entire adult life, finding a grocery store that sells local and sustainable food and home products was incredibly difficult. Fresh produce is always the toughest in this area of the country. Our growing seasons are quite short and our selection is slim. Let alone finding a store that carries green cleaning products.
Slowly but surely Whole Foods Market is expanding into northern New England, making this New Hampshire mom happy as can be. In the last 2 years they have opened 3 stores all with in driving distance from my home and my husband's office. I am officially spoiled and have all of my shopping done in one stop!
At the beginning of the month, I was invited to attend a private tour of their newest New England location in Westford, MA, with a group of other bloggers from the Greater Boston area. I was instantly impressed with the unique to them design of the store. Every Whole Foods Market has a different look and style based on their location.
Like most Whole Foods Markets, they have a great selection of fresh and organic produce, many of them from local farms throughout New England. They even have a fresh juice bar! How great is it to be able to go up to the counter, and order a fresh juice to enjoy while doing the rest of your shopping?
After I stock up on my fresh produce, I alway make my way over to the meat counter, where I drool over everything. They have such fresh and amazing cuts of meat, that are grass fed, many of them free range and organic. I have been eyeing the dry aged steaks for a bit, I can't wait to treat myself to some soon!
Every Whole Foods Market I have ever been to, has the most amazing selection of bulk items. I stock up on my grains, nuts, dried fruits, and dried pasta every trip I make. Buying in bulk is almost always more affordable, and their variety is fantastic! I have never gone in looking for something, and not been able to find it.
They also have an intoxicating beauty and body care isle. The moment you step foot into it, you can smell these amazing soaps. I could easily spend hours testing products and smelling all the things!
When I tell people that I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Whole Foods Market, they look at me like I am crazy. I think most assume that it's too expensive. As in most cases, yes organic and local can mean more money. However I have found that if I buy a lot of their 365 Organic items, I actually do not spend anything extra. I am OBSESSED with that line. The products are superior to any other store brand item I have used. Plus most of it's organic, and all of it meets Whole Foods Market's standards for sustainability.
When planning a special event or party, I always like to do a meat and cheese platter filled with unique cheeses for my friends and family to sample. Whole Foods Market has a selection of every cheese you could dream of. Whole Foods Westward happens to have Harrison from Vermont.... that is actually alive. I am very curious about this cheese, and need to try it at different stages, just to see how it changes the flavor and texture.
As you circle around to the other side of the store, this is where my impulse buying will happen. They have a Clover Food Lab. For those of you in the Boston area, you must know what Clover Food Lab is. They serve lunch and dinner in this Whole Foods Market location 7 days a week. Whole Foods Westward, is the ONLY Whole Foods market to have a Clover Food Lab serving up food to go, or to enjoy right there in the store.
After I grab a BBQ Seitan sandwich, I'm walking over to the bakery department to order a fresh filled cannoli.... S'more bars, and of course gorgeous colorful macarons! What I love about this particular Whole Foods Market bakery, they have a viewing section. It's all glass on one side, set up with comfy chairs and kids tables. You can watch the bakers at work while you enjoy your food, or sip on a coffee from their cafe.
Don't even get me started on the coffee.... they have nitro cold brew. For all you coffee drinkers, you have to try it. It's best enjoyed black, it's so smooth you do not need to junk it up with cream and sugar. Instead of serving it on ice like most iced coffees/cold brews. This is ice cold because it's chilled with nitrous! How neat and futuristic, am I right?
In the picture below, can you can see all those gorgeous purple and green micro-greens? I know it may seem silly, and small, but having items like that make this food photog so happy. They are a gorgeous garnish or green to use in so many savory recipes. Thanks to Whole Foods Market, I can get my hands on little things like that, easily!
Curried Spring Onion and Pea Soup
2 tbs clarified butter (olive oil or soy butter to make it vegan)
3 cups diced spring onions (use the white onion portion and the tops tops)
4 gloves of freshly minced garlic
5 cups of freshly shelled peas (you can also use frozen peas)
2 1/4 tsp Kosher salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1-3 tbs Thai green curry paste (this has some heat! Be sure to taste test as you cook. Add more or less depending on your preferences)
4 cups chicken bone broth (You can also use chicken stock, vegetable stock, or pork stock)
*Optional toppings, cubed ham, shredded pork or chicken, bacon, prosciutto, Greek yogurt, coconut cream, or Crème fraîche
In the bottom of a heavy bottom dutch oven or stock pot, add clarified butter, onions, garlic, and peas. Sauté for about 10 minutes over medium heat, or until the onions are translucent and the mixture is very fragrant.
Add in salt, pepper, curry paste and bone broth.
Bring to a boil.
Remove from heat, and blend with an immersion blender or a stand blender.
Serve hot with optional toppings.
