Easy Homemade Grapefruit Ginger Ale

I don't drink soda, and as a rule we do not keep it in the house or allow the kids to have it either. Because my kids were never exposed to it, the couple times they tried it at a restaurant or at a BBQ... they hated it! I would say that is a parenting win! My kids prefer to drink just milk or water.

On occasion though, I am known to enjoy a really good ginger ale. Not that Canada Dry stuff... but something made with real ginger packed with a bite. I like a really spicy ginger ale especially for cocktail making.

I do not own a soda stream and have no patience to bottle my own. I just like to be able to make a bubbly drink on occasion. That's why I love this recipe. It is easy to make, you prepare a quick ginger and grapefruit infused syrup and add it to your favorite carbonated water when you want to serve. Add a bit of gin or whiskey for a grown up version.

Easy Homemade Grapefruit Ginger Ale

Ingredients:
1 large piece of fresh ginger root cut into strips (the more ginger you add the more spice it has. My root was 8 inches long)
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup fresh grapefruit juice
2 tbs fresh lemon juice
Carbonated water for serving
Directions:
In a sauce pan add all of your ingredients and bring to a full boil.
Remove from heat, and allow it to set or "steep" for about 20 minutes.
Strain syrup into a large canning jar or other heat container that can be sealed. I sometimes leave a piece or two of the ginger root to continue steeping... extra spice!
Refrigerate until cold, can last up to one month in the fridge.
To prepare soda, add 2-4 tbs (depending on your tastes) to a glass of carbonated water.
I like to add a shot of gin to my soda and serve with some fresh sage and a slice of ginger for a winter cocktail. It's so refreshing and citrusy!

    1. Diet Coke is like a drug I swear, it's a hard thing to wean off! I should buy a soda stream for special drinks like this so I don't have to buy carbonated water anymore.

  5. OOOH! I love ginger!! I bought a SodaStream when I was living in Singapore, as soda water was so much more exxy there than back here in Australia, really saved me money in making my own. Reclaimed mine back from my little brother as soon as I moved back lol. Can you make this with maple syrup or honey? I can't have sugar for dietary reasons.
