BlogHer Food 2014 Recap

Ya know.. Just hanging with PW. We are besties.
There was a time in my life where I felt the need to always be busy or on the go. My days off from work were filled with plans and day trips, shopping, coffee with friends, sight seeing you name I would plan it.

Then I had kids. As soon as the hassle of diaper bags, packing lunches, public bathrooms with potty training toddlers came in to play. I started staying put. One would think that I would go crazy being couped up at home so often. But to be honest, I love it. I have turned into such a homebody!

But every once in a great while, I need to break loose and do something on my own, no diaper bags, no worries about having car ride snacks, or if one of the kids will have an accident before I find a bathroom. This year, I broke loose and flew to Miami, for BlogHer Food 2014.

The start of my trip was a bit touch and go. I was unsure if I would even LIVE through my plane ride let alone get to Miami and actually have some fun. You see... there was a tornado at the moment my flight needed to land in Miami.... soooo as you can imagine it was kind of scary. Things got dark. The clouds were so thick I could not see the wings. The captain comes on and says we can't land and there will be a slight delay. 10-15 minutes. I thought. Oh no biggy. 15 minutes, I can deal with the obnoxious therapist sitting next to me who thought he was super important. But the Captain comes on again and says "Sorry folks, we have to reroute for fuel and will land in Palm Beach." We sit and we wait in Palm Beach for fuel on the runway for what feels like an eternity. Just as my back ache was getting to the unbearable point, and I was about to elbow Mr. Big Shot sitting next to me. The plane takes off and we land in Miami 15 minutes later. Little did we all know WHY we could not land on time in the first place. Once arriving in Miami, we realize there was a freaking tornado right near the airport. Fun times.

I arrived at my hotel at 5:30, only 2-3 hours later than planned. Typically I'm not one to stress. But I was stressed. I was planning a party for my conference sponsor Davidson's Safest Choice that night and had to have all the food and cocktails ready for 8 pm.

Safest Choice was great, they sent me a large package of supplies for the party so I would not have to shop for much, however the hotel lost that package. So I was left to my own devices. Luckily there was a Publix about a block away so I was able to walk to the store to buy all the alcohol, supplies, and snacks. 3 walking trips to the store later and I was all set! (Shout out to my favorite Texan, Katie from Hill Country Cook.... she helped lug trip #1 back to the hotel with me!)

Me shaking up a Royal Gin Fizz, perhaps making a bit of a mess!
Though the start of the night started off a tad rough, I was still able to get what I thought would be a small party started. Little did I know we would be throwing an awesome party. Everyone had similar travel experiences like I did (some worse), so they were all relieved to grab a drink, kick back and talk with old and new friends for the night.  We thought we might end up with about 20 guests in all, but at one point our hotel suite was filled with 40 food bloggers, the room was so loud we had to yell to hear one another. It's amazing hotel security did not get all up in our business.

One of the cocktails we highlighted at the party was the Royal Gin Fizz. This is a cocktail traditionally made with raw egg whites. Over the years cocktails with raw eggs have slowly died out due to fear of contracting things like listeria. However thanks to  Davidson's Safest Choice, we can now get our hands on pasteurized eggs! Preparing and consuming raw egg whites is totally safe when using Safest Choice!

Some ladies were a bit hesitant to try the cocktails, but the ones that did, loved them! To get the full recipe for a Royal Gin Fizz, be sure to check it out on Davidson's Safest Choice's website.

Lunch with some of my favorite people EVER
Myself, Savory Simple, Foodie Crush Magazine, Dinners, Dishes, and Desserts, I wash you Dry, That Skinny Chick Can Bake, and Hip Foodie Mom at the Wisconsin Cheese Party
The rest of the weekend was filled with sessions, outings, parties with conference sponsors, and of course meeting big wigs like The Pioneer Women (see photo at the top of the post!)

The Law Student's Wife and I have incredible taste in clothing!

Two of my favorites, All Day I dream about Food and Dinner Dishes and Desserts

Somehow I managed to burn myself out in 4 days of travel and networking. Over a week later, and I'm now just starting to get back into the swing of life.

For more information on egg safety, pasteurization, and some great egg recipes, go to Safest Choice's website, OR tweet them at @safeeggs with product questions!

A big high five for raw egg cocktails and a huge thanks to my BlogHer Food sponsor, Davidson's Safest Choice Eggs!!

(Disclaimer: Davidson's Safest Choice paid for me to attend BlogHer Food 2014. However all opinions are 100% my own.)

love the recap!! and I'm so happy we were able to meet in person and have connected online! After such a rocky start to our Miami getaways (the crazy weather and delayed flights for everyone!). I'm so glad the trip turned out to be such a wonderful one for everyone. . and I totally hear you on how life has changed since having kids. . I love it too but it was SO nice to be able to relax, kick back and not have a small child stuck to my leg. :)
