Surprise-Inside Zebra Cake and a Giveaway

My friend Amanda from I am Baker recently published her first cookbook, Surprise-Inside Cakes. It is exactly as the title describes. Cakes baked with surprises on the inside. Her book is filled with great photo tutorials on how to make some of the most unique and fun cakes for every occasion.

Now, I am not exactly a cake person. I have little experience with decorating. Hand me a pastry bag and tell me to make something look pretty and you and I will both end up with tons of frosting in our hair or all over the kitchen.

Even though I am a disaster when it comes to cake assembly and decorating, I think I did an OK job using her tutorial on how to make a Zebra Cake. I made some mistakes, things got messy. I may not have cut my layers thin enough...  I may have even over baked my cakes thanks to a mid morning gab session with a friend and my inability to use a timer. I discovered that I am NO I am Baker! But who cares... my kids thought it was fantastic and super neat when I surprised them with it later that afternoon. They figured it was just a regular chocolate cake. But then *boom* zebra stripes. They thought I was pretty awesome!

Not only did Amanda publish this great book filled with tutorials, but she also has an online class offered on Craftsy. Since attempting the Zebra Cake, I've realized I need more of Amanda's help in the cake department. Therefor I will be taking her class soon and then coming back here to share what I learned with you all. PLUS... I may even have a Craftsy Class giveaway coming up!

  7. Well there's chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream, and there's vanilla cake with mocha icing, and carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, and cookie cake with or without frosting, and lemon cake, and okay I'll say it, I like cake... a lot. It all depends on what I'm in the mood for, the one thing I can say for certain is that no matter what kind of cake it is, it shouldn't have that fake plastic-y shelf stable icing.

  8. I have two favorites. The first is a simple chocolate cake with vanilla butter-cream icing. The second is a four layer chocolate cake I make that alternates Nutella and coconut pecan fillings, is topped with the coconut pecan and has the sides finished with chocolate fudge icing. Yum! (ツ)

  14. My favorite cake is carrot cake. I make a gluten free one adding raisins, coconut and chopped pecans or walnuts. It is very moist, so I don't need to add the cream cheese frosting.
