Maple Brown Sugar Cream Pie w/ Brown Sugar Meringue

New favorite Pie!! My old favorite would probably be the Sugar Cream Pie also known as a  Hoosier Pie. Growing up we I ate a lot of Mrs. Wicks Sugar Cream Pie when I would spend summers with my grandparents. Instead of whipping up my childhood favorite for Thanksgiving I am doing a New England Twist on the Sugar Cream Pie and going with maple instead.

Maple Brown Sugar Cream Pie w/ Brown Sugar Meringue Topping

Ingredients for pie:
1 uncooked single pie shell (I make my own butter crust... you can buy store bought if you'd like)
1 cup of maple syrup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1tsp vanilla extract
2 tbs melted butter
3 eggs
1 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt

Directions:

In a medium mixing bowl mix together all of your filling ingredients.

Pour into uncooked pie crust.

Bake at 400 for 30 minutes or until center of the pie is set. If it starts to crack you are over baking it.

Ingredients for Brown Sugar Meringue Topping:

3 egg whites (room temperature)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt

Directions:
In your electric mixer beat eggs on high speed until foamy/frothy looking.  Reduce speed to med/low slowly add in brown sugar and salt. Turn speed back up to high and beat until stiff peaks are formed.

Top the pie with the meringue and bake for an additional 10-20 minutes at 350. When tips of the meringue start to brown it is done!

Let it cool to room temp, then serve and enjoy!

  6. MMM I am drooling over your pictures. This is so pretty, and sounds amazing! I live in Indiana (West Lafayette/Purdue) and I think I have only had sugar cream pie once... But it looks like I need to make it more often! ;)

  8. I haven't had a maple pie in years! We had our own sugar bush and my grandmother used to make them for special occasions. Brings back great memories. Thanks for the post

  10. was this meringue supposed to be crunchy or gooey because i couldnt get used to the consistency of mine - it was gooey..... otherwise delicious!! i just didnt eat the topping

  11. Meringue when it is used as a pie topper should be fluffy. Not really gooey. My guess is that you didn't whip it enough. Make sure you get stiff peaks before putting it on top of the pie.

After It bakes the peaks will brown but not get crunchy.

    1. Hi Sheri, I am sorry your pie did not work. I have made this exact recipe many times and have yet to have an issue with it. Perhaps you did not bake it long enough? If you have any additional comments or questions please email me rather than leaving rude comments. I do appreciate constructive feed back... however this is not constructive.

    2. What a horrible comment to leave. Is this how you would speak to someone in person? Did it ever occur to you that YOU made an error? It never ceases to amaze me how rude people are when they can hide behind their computer.

  15. Carrie, I so want to make this for my husband. Is this pure maple syrup or something like "Mrs Buttersworth"? I can't wait to try this.
