Apple Cherry Picnic Pies

Today I did two pie recipes with Apples and Cherries.

This being #1 and so perfect for little hands. The boys ate them up after dinner. As well as some pastry dough cookies earlier in the day that I had whipped up with my extra dough. For what to do with that extra pastry dough CLICK HERE

Some might call these hand pies, or turn overs. I'm going to call them picnic pies. Because they are the perfect size and shape to pack for a picnic!

I was so excited yesterday when I found apples ripe at the local orchard, I picked up  a bag of Golden Gingers.

So happy apple season is finally here... it is my favorite time of year.

This recipe is so easy too, try it out!

Apple Cherry Picnic Pies

Ingredients:
4 apples pealed and chopped into chunks
1 cup fresh  cherries pitted and halved
Double pie crust My Best Crust Recipe CLICK HERE
The zest of one lemon
The juice of half a lemon
1/8 cup flour
1/8 cup corn starch
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg.

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400.

Roll pie crust out into large circle, with a cereal bowl cut out circles. My bowls were about 6 inches across.

On a parchment paper lined cookie sheet place your cut out pie crusts.

In a medium sized mixing bowl toss fruit with all other ingredients together.

Drop about 3 tbs of fruit filling on each pie crust leaving room to fold crust over and seal.

Crimp edges with a floured fork.

Cut three small vents.

Brush with an egg wash and dust with sugar.

Bake for 20-30 minutes. Till the crust is golden brown.

Enjoy them hot if your like me... but also super good cold (and the next day for breakfast!)

  1. These look soooo scrumptious! My mouth is watering. I am a huge fan or portable desserts (less dishes to wash) and I absolutely adore your porcelain basket to hold the pies:-)

  2. I love those pies! I want to try them with blueberries. I also have put meat in them and you have a meat pie.

  3. @Sunshine... great idea... I do love meat pies so I will have to make these smaller versions of them!

  4. @Girl From Scratch. Thanks, I love that little basket as well!

  5. These look so amazing. I won't lie... pies of any kind scare me. One year for Thanksgiving I made both a pumpkin and apple pie from scratch for the first time ever and they both turned out... less than desirable. Maybe I could try these to get brave again?!
